Beginning My Journey In Tech
Technology has always been very fascinating to me. We rely on so many things like cellphones, computers, smart TVs, maps, and many more on a daily basis.
Some background…
Growing up, I spent more time taking apart my toys (remote controlled cars, robots, …) than actually playing with them. I enjoyed seeing all the components that was used for building it, and then later putting things back together to make sure it was still working the same. (spoiler alert…). It wasn’t working two third of the time at that age. My parents would always get onto me for breaking things.
That habit still remains in me today. To this date I have open almost every piece of electronics that I have.
All this is to say that I was more interested in the physical components of electronics.
A few years ago, a friend of mine and I decide to create an e-commerce website, where we were planning on selling some electronic scooter, at the time called hoverboards.
The idea didn’t take off due to couple things, one of the major ones being building a website for it. So we kind of gave up.
After that we had other ideas but most centered on a website, or mobile apps. That was when I realized things will be hard if I don’t get some kind of knowledge in that field. Due to some personal issues, I never really started learning anything about building a website, or an app until the pandemic hit. The world kind of came on a pause. I was driving for Uber at the time, and decided since I can’t interact with people, this would be the perfect time to acquire a new set of skills that could steer my life in another direction.
That’s when I decided to join the Flatiron software engineering immersive program. Staying in Uber doesn’t allow much room for growth. With technology always and rapidly evolving, sooner or later we will all have some part in it.
I’ve been in the program for four months now, and currently at the end of our 4th module where my cohort and I are working with “React”. This is one of the best decision I have ever made for myself.
So far in the program…
Module 1: We’ve learned to work with “Ruby”, which is a dynamic, open source programming language with a focus on simplicity and productivity. It has an elegant syntax that is natural to read and easy to write. In my opinion a great start point for beginners.
Module 2: We worked with Rails. “Rails” combines the Ruby programming language with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create a web application that runs on a web server. Because it runs on a web server, it is considered a server-side, or “back end,” web application development platform.
Module 3: “JavaScript” was the center of attention. JavaScript (often shortened to JS) is a lightweight, interpreted, object-oriented language with first-class functions, and is best known as the scripting language for Web pages, but it’s used in many non-browser environments as well.
Module 4: (current module) As mentioned earlier, in this mod we are focusing on “React”. React is a declarative, efficient, and flexible JavaScript library for building user interfaces. It lets you compose complex UIs from small and isolated pieces of code called “components.
This program has been intense, but an amazing experience all along. Many resources are available to the students.The instructors and leads are greats. I’m just thankful I was able to join this program and excited about how much more I can learn after this.
